Key Areas Of Intervention & Support For Vision 2020 Activities
Other Areas Of Work

At Brien Holden Vision Institute, Public Health we believe that sight is a fundamental right for everyone, everywhere. Our mission is to develop new solutions for vision care and eliminate vision impairment and avoidable blindness, thereby reducing poverty and suffering. In the last 15 years, through the combination of innovative research with education and service infrastructure, Brien Holden vision Institute has worked in 54 countries, provided optometric services and glasses to over 3 million people at our 429 vision centres and eye care sites, and trained almost 130,000 eye care personnel around the world.

As a non-government organisation, we can develop programs but we recognise that we can’t implement a global solution on our own. We must establish partnerships at a local level, develop local leadership, partner with other development organisations, think beyond eye care to health care and focus on an anti-poverty agenda. Integrating all of these components is the only way to effectively scale-up our efforts without creating dependency on the Institute.

Being part of the broader development agenda is a logical fit for the Institute and eye care programs in general. By addressing uncorrected refractive error we are improving people’s employment opportunities, we are enhancing the educational opportunities for children and we’re improving the quality of life of millions. We also partner with industry leaders to license our products, using royalties to fund further research, advocacy, public health and education.

Brien Holden Vision Institute Academy
We believe that education and training is the only way to build the capacity necessary to affect change. The aim of the Brien Holden Vision Institute Academy is to be a centre of excellence for global education and to ensure that sustainable and high quality vision care education is delivered with a commitment to life-long learning and excellence especially in the developing context.
Operating alongside the Institute’s human resource development activities, the Academy supports the implementation of sustainable programs by creating and providing the educational support essential for capacity building activities. Improving delivery of eye care necessitates establishing eye health advocates at every level and up-scaling the global workforce – from ‘screener’ to eye care professionals
